<p>Overweight or <strong>obesity </strong>can be described as a very unhealthy accumulation of body fats. The excessive disposition of body fat leads to many health complications and even reduce the life expectancy of affected people. Obesity is measured in terms of body mass index which is obtained by dividing your weight by the square of your height. A body mass index in the range of 25-30 Kg/m2 is considered overweight, but if your BMI is more than 30 Kg/m2, it indicates that you are suffering from obesity.</p>
<p>Clinical trials and scientific studies have confirmed that obesity is linked to various health issues like osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea and certain types of cancer. In 2013, obesity has been classified as a disease.</p>
<p>Obesity is mainly caused by excessive intake of food energy, sedentary lifestyle, genetic or endocrine disorders, medication side effects, psychological issues or any combination of these factors. Top five causes of obesity can be described as follows:</p>
<p><strong>Excess Intake of Food</strong>: Our body is supposed to store excess food energy as fat. If you are unable to resist your temptation for favorite delicacies, particularly fad-laden fast foods and sugary beverages, there can be no respite from obesity. Overeating has always been associated with wealth and fertility, but nowadays people are getting addicted to highly processed and unhealthy food. People&#8217;s eating behavior may be influenced by several factors like emotional stress, availability of food, desire to enjoy some snacks while watching TV, depression, reliance of packaged food and many more.</p>
<p><strong>Sedentary Lifestyle</strong>: Innovation and technological advancement have paved the way to modern civilization, but our innovations and technologies are designed to help us lead a comfortable life. Our body is not designed to lead sun an inactive life, but we are using cars, escalators and even remote control devices to cut down our physical activity. Physical activity or exercises are essential to maintain your health and well-being. If you are addicted to computer games or enjoying your favorite past time activity while sitting in the cozy chair and gulping colas, obesity is bound to occur.</p>
<p><strong>Medical Conditions</strong>: Disorders in the endocrine system is the third most common cause of obesity. Certain health conditions like Hypothyroidism, Cushing&#8217;s syndrome and depression may cause obesity. Thyroid is a hormone which is very essential for normal metabolism. Any deficiency of this hormone slows down the metabolism and people start accumulating fat.</p>
<p>In Cushing syndrome, excess amounts of cortisol is produced which leads to fat deposition. It is well-known that certain weight-gain occurs during the pregnancy. Avoiding breastfeeding or leading inactive lifestyle after delivery can make you obese. Certain medications, particularly steroids, anti-hypertensive, anti-depressants, antipsychotics and anti- seizure drugs are known to cause weight gain.</p>
<p><strong>Psychological Distress</strong>: When people suffer from any deep rooted emotional trauma, they try to release their emotional stress by overeating. Many people overeat when they confuse the psychological void with hunger. Several research studies and clinical trials have established that fact that psychological problems lead to eating disorders. Depression is a well-known psychological problem when people indulge in over eating.</p>
<p><strong>Inherited Genes</strong>: If your parents are obese, you are more likely to develop obesity. Genetic susceptibility is another very important cause of obesity. Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome are classic examples of genetic susceptibility, but behavioral aspects may be more important than genes. There are 56 different genes that relate to obesity phenotypes.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>1. <strong>Low-calorie portion controlled diet</strong>: Successful weight loss maintainers continue to act like recently successful weight losers for many years after weight loss. They do not believe in a transient change but a lasting change in lifestyle and dietary habits. We typically ask our patients to limit their carbohydrate intake during the daytime and eat between 1200 and 2000 calories each day. We have them weigh in once a week to make sure that their calorie/carbohydrate intake is not causing weight regain. Often meal replacements are used to substitute for meals so there is fewer stimuli to eat more types of/ quantities of foods and a known carbohydrate/caloric intake is utilized. Diets that typically vary more lead to weight regain whereas diets that are simplified and restricted to less food types lead to improved weight loss and weight maintenance. The National Weight Control Registry has indicated that people who keep 30 pounds or more off for six years typically have an average intake of 1400 cal. Obviously people with more muscle mass can eat more in this typically refers to men. Women, typically have less muscle mass and as result need to have less caloric intake.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Exercise:</strong> Exercise can be as simple as 3 1/2 hours per week or 2800 calories per week of physical activity. Patients who tend to keep weight off average 2500 calories per week for women and 3300 calories per week for men. Also limiting TV viewing time and limiting eating out to less than once a week seems to be beneficial. The average American male watches 29 hours per week of television in the average American female watches 34 hours per week of television. There is a 25% risk of obesity for each two-hour block of sedentary activity done each day. Therefore it is important to get up and move. Body movement burns energy due to skeletal muscle use and it maintains physical fitness and decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. Does exercise produce weight loss? The answer is yes as physical activity typically is shown to influence approximately 3% of total body weight in most studies. Also, the average weight loss per week of exercise alone is 1 pound. Brisk walking is the standard in all programs. A simple rule is some exercise is better than none and more is better. There are many smart phone applications that can determine calories utilized when walking. Look for them as we often recommend to our patients to simply walk more. For those more fitness oriented, weightlifting or weight resistance exercises can be beneficial as this is the only way to build muscle mass or increase your metabolic engine. Always check with your doctor before starting any physical fitness program.</p>
<p>3.<strong> Behavorial Therapy</strong>: Self-monitoring is a basic behavioral technique to maintain weight loss. If there is no consistent monitoring there is typically no success. Set goals based on realistic baseline levels of activity and sedentary activity. An initial goal of a 10% increase of activity will hopefully lead to achieving moderate intense activity of up to 3 to 5 sessions per week and 30 to 60 minutes per session. Increase positive behaviors by making a social commitment to friends and family that you are losing weight and for them to encourage you to stay committed. This will improve your motivation. Know who, when, where, how long and with whom you need to keep associated with to maintain weight loss. Decrease stimulus cues that often increase eating behaviors. This could be as simple as spending less time in the supermarket or spending less time at the dinner table. Also, make it easy to exercise by keeping exercise clothing and footwear nearby exercise apparatus. Change your environment, rearrange your schedule and get exercise equipment out of storage or from under the bed or out in the garage and put in a place where you will likely use it. Also decrease stress by doing breathing exercises or meditation. Those who join exercise clubs with their spouse have a higher adherence rate showing social support is important. Therefore try to be around others who lead healthy lifestyles and buddy up with a friend to help reach your health goals</p>

<p>Around our midsections, there are two different kinds of fat: subcutaneous and visceral.</p>
<p><strong>Subcutaneous &#8211;</strong> It means under the skin. It is the fat we can see and pinch. But, surprisingly, we need to worry less about subcutaneous fat than we do the visceral stuff. It is often described as a &#8220;passive&#8221; fat because it functions primarily as a storage repository.</p>
<p><strong>Visceral &#8211;</strong> It means pertaining to the soft organs in the abdomen. It is the fat stored deep in our abdomens around the intestines, kidneys, pancreas and liver. This is the stuff that tends to make our tummies protrude in classic &#8220;beer belly&#8221; fashion. In contrast, visceral fat is considered very &#8220;active&#8221; because it functions much like a gland itself. It is programmed to break down and release fatty acids and other hormonal substances that are then directly metabolized by the liver. The fatty acids so produced go directly to the liver and produce an unfavorable metabolic environment.</p>
<p>Though located in our abdomens, it can wreak all sorts of damage that goes far beyond our bellies. No other fat in the body does that.</p>
<h2><u><strong>Sex differences &#8211;</strong></u></h2>
<p>There are sex-dependent differences in regional fat distribution.</p>
<p>• Women genetically have more capacity to store fat than men do.</p>
<p>• Men are more susceptible to upper-body fat accumulation, most likely in the belly, due to sex hormone differences. Abdominal obesity in men is correlated with comparatively low testosterone levels.</p>
<p>• In women, estrogen is believed to cause fat to be stored in the buttocks, thighs, and hips. After menopause in women, the estrogen produced by ovaries declines. And fat migrates from their buttocks, hips&#8217; and thighs to their belly.</p>
<p>• Women with higher-than-average levels of testosterone, as well as women with certain medical conditions that cause them to have lower levels of estrogen, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, are also more likely to develop a potbelly than women with typical estrogen levels</p>
<p>• When comparing the body fat of men and women, it is seen that men have close to twice the visceral fat as that of pre-menopausal women.</p>
<h2><u><strong>Measurements of belly fat &#8211;</strong></u></h2>
<p>For women, a waist measurement of 35 inches or more is cause for concern. For men, a waist measurement of 40 inches or more could spell trouble.</p>
<p>For men, a WHR (waist to hip ratio) of greater than 0.95 and, for women, greater than 0.80 are indicative of central obesity.</p>
<h2><u><strong>Health risks of belly fat &#8211;</strong></u></h2>
<p>Belly fat is considered to be a risk for the following conditions:</p>
<p><strong>Cardio-vascular disease &#8211;</strong> Pot belly is the best indicator for cardio-vascular risk. Researchers have found that those who are not overweight but have a bulging midriff are 2.75 times more at risk of dying from cardio-vascular disease than normal weight and a proportionate waistline.</p>
<p><strong>Stroke &#8211; </strong>Belly fat hastens the process of atherosclerosis, which means hardening of arteries, making heart attacks and strokes more likely.</p>
<p><strong>Type-2 diabetes &#8211; </strong>People with large bellies tend to lose sensitivity to insulin, resulting in insulin resistance, which often develops into type-2 diabetes.</p>
<p><strong>High blood pressure &#8211; </strong>Researchers have found that abdominal obesity leads to increased risk for hypertension.</p>
<p><strong>Dementia &#8211;</strong> Middle-aged people with high abdominal fat are 3.6 times as likely to suffer from memory loss and dementia later on in life, researchers have discovered at Rush University Medical Centre.</p>
<p><strong>Erectile dysfunction &#8211;</strong> Belly fat is actually reducing the male&#8217;s testosterone levels, which can lead to erectile dysfunction. It also produces an enzyme called aromatase, which converts testosterone to estrogen in a one-way pathway.</p>
<p><strong>Breast cancer &#8211;</strong> The researchers note in a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that abdominal fat is associated with pre-diabetes. Insulin receptors are expressed in most breast cancers and have been shown to stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. This suggests that an insulin-related pathway of abdominal adiposity is involved in the etiology of premenopausal breast cancer.</p>
<h2><u><strong>The crux &#8211;</strong></u></h2>
<p>The health experts unequivocally proclaim that pot belly has some very serious health risks. And still most of us ignore their advice. I don&#8217;t understand why it is ignored so much. In fact, belly fat functions like a gland, releasing fatty acids and hormonal substances that are detrimental to our health. Regular exercise, consumption of healthy diet and adequate management of stress will go a long way in reducing belly fat</p>

According to some estimates, at least 400,000 deaths each year may be attributed to obesity.</p>
<p>What people must know is that you can improve your health quickly with just a small amount of weight loss. “We know that physical activity along with reduced calorie consumption can lead to the 5 to 10 percent weight loss necessary to achieve remission of the obesity-associated complications,” says William Dietz, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).</p>

The message &#8220;I made a nice meal for you because I like you and I care about you&#8221; is still there, although we don&#8217;t realize it.
